Young People Paid Internships: Community Culture & Heritage Project
An Exciting Paid Opportunity for Young Producers
In Partnership with Museum of London Archaeology
Are you aged 16–21 years and curious about culture, community, or history?
We’re offering a unique paid internship opportunity to be part of developing a young person / community-led cultural plan for an exciting community space in East London, Boars Head Theatre and Exhibition Centre. This space combines live performance, community activities, and a mini museum built over a real archaeological dig!
While building high-quality accommodation for Kings College students in Aldgate East, the Museum of London's archaeology team discovered the foundations of an Elizabethan Theatre from 1598, called the BoarsHead Playhouse. This find is nationally important. They also found a mix of other heritage items from over 400 years. To honour these discoveries, Unite Students built a performance space and an exhibition centre on the site of the old playhouse. This exhibition space showcases some of the archaeological finds and enhances the cultural life of the borough.
Working with Unite Students to engage the local community, especially young people, in accessing the Exhibition Centre and developing social and cultural events. Since 2023, we’ve involved young people in projects like heritage education and film-making to highlight the importance of caring for historic buildings. We’ve also hosted fashion shows, concerts, and film screenings, using the space to showcase youth creativity and culture. Now, we’re taking the next step. In collaboration with Unite Students, we’re developing a youth-led cultural plan shaped by a core group of local young people. This plan will guide the creation of new programmes run from the Exhibition space — putting young people at the heart of shaping social and cultural life in their area.
Aim & Purpose
To achieve this we have partnered with the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) to engage and recruit a local team of young people, in designing a plan for cultural activities for the space. This plan will include events, workshops, and other activities that celebrate the area's history and culture. The project will also provide education, training, and work experience opportunities for young people, helping them develop skills and gain valuable experience. By working together, with the Young Producers Team we aim to create a vibrant and inclusive space that everyone can enjoy.
We are seeking a team of up to 5 young people to be part of the Young Producers Team who will take an active role in co-producing in the Cultural Plan for the Theatre and Exhibition Centre. The Young Producers will be led by the Young Person Cultural Team Leader.
